Inn River: Scuol and Giarsun Gorges

Location: Near St. Moritz Ski Resort in Eastern Swizterland

The Scuol and Giarsun Gorges of the Inn River are located in the Lower Engadine Valley, in the canton of Graubünden in southeast Switzerland. Rafting trips on this stretch of the Inn River meet about 1 ½ hours from Landeck in the town of Scuol, near the famed St Moritz ski resort.

Level of Difficulty: Class IV / Intermediate

Both the Scuol and Giarsun Gorges are Class IV, although the Scuol Gorge is a little less technical than Giarsun Gorge. The minimum age for a rafting trip on the Inn River is usually between 14 and 16 years old. The gorges can be run separately, each as a half-day trip, or may be combined into a full day rafting trip.

The Canyon: Narrow, Thickly-Forested Valleys and Traditional Engadine Villages

The Lower Engadine Valley, which contains both the Scuol and Giarsun gorges of the Inn River, is a narrow, thickly forested valley surrounded by high mountains on all sides. The wide meadows of the Upper Engadine are replaced by larch woods, and traditional villages sit high on sunny terraces that were formed during the last glacial period. Houses are centuries old, classic Engadine structures with thick stone masonry walls, circular windows, and wall paintings. In contrast to its peaceful surroundings, the Inn River’s whitewater is loud and intense. The rapids range from big-water style maneuvering with huge, standing waves, to steep and technical. The entire last mile and a half of the Scuol Gorge is one continuous Class IV rapid. Rafting trips on the Scuol Gorge section are 8 kilometers long, and the Giarsun Gorge is 12 kilometers long. The two gorges are separated by Pradella Lake, where many rafting companies will break for lunch.
